  • Mongolia continues to extend suspension of all inbound travel from foreign locations and has banned the entry of all foreign nationals.  All commercial flights, passenger rail, and auto traffic into and out of Mongolia are suspended during the time these measures remain in effect.
  • As of August 14, Mongolia had not experienced any cases of community transmission of COVID-19.
  • Confirmation of School Closures for Remainder of Academic Year: Mongolian public schools and kindergartens are scheduled to reopen on September 1, 2020. Vocational school training will open on September 14, 2020, and universities and colleges will open on October 5, 2020.
  • Commercial/Charter Flights: The Mongolian government has authorized a limited number of infrequent charter flights to locations outside of Mongolia and announces the schedule of these at regular press conferences.
  • Local authorities have confirmed hundreds of cases of COVID-19 in Mongolia.  These cases have all been observed in travelers returning from foreign locations to Mongolia.  All persons with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mongolia are currently in quarantine as are all travelers returning from foreign locations.
  • Daily life in Mongolia has gradually returned to resembling that of pre-COVID-19 conditions.  Travelers present in Mongolia should take precautions had be prepared to shelter in place for extended periods of time.

Entry and Exit Requirements:

  • All inbound travels from foreign locations to Mongolia has been suspended. This suspension has been regularly extended and the all Embassy expects the suspension to continue in the near future.  All commercial flights, passenger rail, and auto traffic into and out of Mongolia are suspended during the time these measures remain in effect.
  • Travelers accredited to diplomatic missions, international organizations, and their direct family will be granted entry but will be quarantined for 21 days upon arrival.
  • Generally, all other foreign citizen travelers will be denied entry to Mongolia until these emergency measures are rescinded, however, the government has indicated that they may make exceptions for direct family members of Mongolian citizens or those foreigners who hold valid resident permits.
  • All travelers are subject to health screenings and quarantine upon entry to Mongolia.
  • Negative COVID-19 test is not required for entry. However, test may be required to board on a flight based on inbound country specification.
  • Visas for foreign citizens with permanent residence in Mongolia are being extended with certain requirements. Exit deadlines have also been extended for Foreign citizens who hold temporary visitor or business visas and those who entered the country without a visa for stays of up to 90 days. The Mongolian Immigration Agency is in the process of reviewing regulations for foreigners who entered the country on a temporary visitor visa.

Quarantine Information:

  • All travelers to Mongolia from overseas required to undergo the combined 35-day quarantine/self-isolation period. Mongolian public-health authorities require that individuals arriving in Mongolia from any foreign country, i.e., every traveler arriving in Mongolia from overseas, will be quarantined under observation at a government-monitored quarantine facility for 21 days followed by 14 days self-isolation.
  • All travelers are required to pay the Mongolian government for the cost of the 21-day quarantine in a government facility and are required to report temperature checks regularly to health officials during the period of self-isolation.

COVID-19 Testing:

  • The Mongolian Government requires mandatory COVID-19 testing by National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) for all arriving travelers. This testing is free for every traveler to Mongolia from overseas and the testing cost is covered by the Mongolian Government.

Transportation Options:

  • Mongolia continues to extend suspension of all inbound travel from foreign locations and has banned the entry of all foreign nationals. All commercial flights, passenger rail, and auto traffic into and out of Mongolia are suspended during the time these measures remain in effect.
  • Public transportation is operating normally. Wearing face masks and practicing social distance is compulsory aboard all public transportation. Public observance of these measures is not consistent. The Ministry of Health is widely encouraging and advertising the regular use of face masks.

Fines for Non-Compliance:

  • The State Emergency Commission mandates the use of protective face masks throughout Mongolia on situational basis. When that in effect, people who are not utilizing protective face masks, contravening the regulation, are subject to a penalty of MNT 150,000 ($52) in accordance with the Law on Petty Offenses.

Consular Operations:

  • All routine immigrant and nonimmigrant visa services are suspended as of March 20,. 2020 and all appointments are cancelled at this time but continuing to provide emergency and mission-critical visa services as resources and local conditions allow.
